Production Blog: Change In Cast

Before I began filming my project I had to make a big decision as one of the actors in the project was unable to show for the filming. This complete change in direction temporarily threw my plans for formulating my music video in a loop as the lack of a main character would make the filming of my commercial impossible. I decided that the best way to combat this issue would be to replace the missing character with a new actor who could fill the role somewhat. This plan seemed flawless at first with all of the production issues solved. However, this change also revealed to my group the flaws in our storyboard which inspired us to make some major alterations to the story while maintaining the original plot.

First I decided that the assailant in the video should be present as a side character and friend throughout the first half of the music video. This was done so that I could introduce the character more effectively establish the motive for the assailant and develop the character themselves. This change would impact the first few scenes as a new character would be present in the club. This also altered the angles in which the shots where filmed, these changes where made by always ensuring that the assailant was out of the forefront of the camera making them appear like an outcast. I also added new camera movements so that the shots would more easily convey detail and so that some elements of the set could be hidden from the viewer.

The second major change was to make the music videos story a loop. I did this by adding a new scene to the beginning and end of the music video where the character has a realization of the events that occurred. This was done to create interest in the viewer and make our music video more unique compared to others on media platforms. This change also meant that the assailant would be the perspective the story is being told through which creates a unique twist. However, this change forced my group to remove the scene where the friend of the main character fights back against the assailant to respect time constraints.

When looking back upon the changes my group made the loss of an actor almost was a positive obstacle as it made me realize the flaws in my project. This was heavily shown in my alterations to the order of scenes and the introduction of the assailant much earlier. It is also shown in my decision to make the music video a loop which makes the video much more exciting. These changes also inspired me to make changes in the camera angles and movements throughout the video which aids my improvement as a film-maker. Overall these changes greatly impacted the final result of the video in a positive manner and inspired me to be a better film maker.
