Production Blog: Filming

I began filming my project on the morning of December fourth with the hopes of concluding the filming process on the same day. The first thing I did was ensure that all of my actors understood the task ahead of them and the changes made to the storyboard where understood. Then I took inventory of the props we have available and quickly ran to CVS to grab a few chip bags to make the hang out session more realistic. Shortly after this I prepared the set by placing the props in their desired location and prepared the camera.

Once this was all done and the production process was underway, the filming of the first few scenes went according to plan and things where looking good. With the only issues we faced being the occasional flow of people in and out of the clubhouse in which we where filming. This issue however was bot very impactful as we made sure to record in areas that do not display the main walkway hiding club goers from sight. After filming the first two scenes my group positioned the camera to film the next shot in the club. However, once we reviewed the outcome of the takes we realized that the angle of the camera was to low and did not reveal our heads. While this was at first comical it grew frustrating as I could not discover a camera placement that would effectively show  our whole bodies. After many attempts however we discovered the perfect angle and distance to film the shot.

Next we moved location and began filming the scenes that take place in the hallway and elevator. The first scene we filmed in this process was the side character and best friend walking out of the elevator arguing and shoving each other, this shot was done without a hitch. Then I made the decision to alter the order of filming so we could shoot all of the scenes in the elevator. However this caused some difficulties and filming the assailant walking into the elevator was difficult as the elevator kept changing floors making it take nearly an hour to get the most desirable take.

After we finally finished with these scenes we wrapped up the filming process rather quickly. Looking back the day of filming was quite difficult with a few scenes taking a majority of the day to film while others where finished almost instantly. Regardless of these issues I thoroughly enjoyed the filming process and I got to enjoy creating a good film. I also feel I gained a better understanding of camera angles and movements due to the major changes that needed to be made throughout the filming process. Overall the process of filming the video was a good experience and I am looking forward to the editing process.
